Learn to Run Your Shotgun with Confidence and Purpose. Join Trace Armory Group for a focused 1-day Defensive Shotgun course at Montgomery Community College.
This course is built for responsible citizens and professionals who want to develop practical, real-world skills with one of the most effective—but often misunderstood—defensive platforms available. You’ll gain a solid foundation in shotgun manipulation, loading under pressure, load selection, patterning, and engaging targets from close to extended distances.
Whether you’re new to shotguns or ready to tighten your fundamentals, this course will push your performance and increase your confidence. This 6-hour course introduces students to the defensive use of the shotgun in home and personal defense. You’ll learn safe handling, ammo selection, loading techniques, patterning with buckshot, slugs at distance, and performing under timed pressure using the FBI Modified Qualification.
The class blends classroom instruction with hands-on range time for a fast-paced, results-driven experience.
Schedule:
• 9:00 AM – Check-In, Safety Brief & Overview
• 10:00 AM – Loading Procedures & Target Engagement Drills
• 11:00 AM – Buckshot Patterning and Distance Application
• 12:00 PM – Long-Range Engagement with Slugs
• 1:00 PM – FBI Modified Shotgun Qualification
• 2:00 PM – Range Cleanup, Final Review & Debrief
• 3:00 PM – Dismissal
What to Bring
• Functional 12 or 20 gauge shotgun with sling
• 125 birdshot (lead only – no steel)
• 25 buckshot
• 15 rifled slugs
• Side saddle or shell caddy preferred
• Dump pouch or shell carrier
• Recoil shoulder pad (recommended)
• Eye and ear protection
• Cleaning supplies for your shotgun
• Weather-appropriate clothing
• Water, lunch/snacks
